If you’re wondering where the name comes from, it’s an Alice in Wonderland reference to the “Mock Turtle’s Story” which was Lewis Carrol’s reference to the popular mock turtle soup of the time. This Story also has one of my favourite word-play scenes between the Gryphon, the Mock Turtle and Alice, where the Mock Turtle discusses his sea school and favourite teacher named Tortoise, who was a sea turtle. The communication between the Mock Turtle and Gryphon soon dwindles to nonsense and Alice’s understanding diminishes and we return to the land of semantic madness.
Growing up bilingual and very often getting the connotation and denotation of words wrong, I became fascinated with words and how they entrap and shape us. And ironically enough I have made them my job and fascination.
This a blog where I try and understand words and certain concepts. Hope you enjoy, and feel free to leave a comment (or maybe even word-discussion requests)!
